When I got an influenza shot this fall, I had a fairly sore arm, although not this bad. I was pretty sure that my muscle had been tensed at the time of the shot, and suspected that that was related, so with this shot I was careful to make sure my arm was completely relaxed. Maybe it's just unrelated!
I did notice that the pain only occurred when I was actively using the muscle. I'm not sure if using the muscle made the soreness worse overall. I also didn't explore the limits of it -- I suspect I *could* have raised my arm all the way up, and it just would have been horribly painful. :-P
